A group of Pyrenean Mastiffs (Mastin del Pirineo)

The area above is part of the Pyrenees that appears to be the historical
"cradle" of the breed. The area known as "Hautes Pyrenees" is roughly
south of Lourdes and includes Argelés-Gazost, Cauterets, Gavarnie, Bagnèes-de-Bigorre
and others. Senac-Lagrange was born in Cauterets and died nearby. M. Duconte the second
president of the RACP grew up just across the street from the family home of Cazaux-Moutou
of "de Soum" fame in Lourdes and lived in Pau. M. Mansencal the
third President of the RACP is from Tarbes. When M. Dretzen went to the Pyrenees
Mountains in 1907 with Count Henri de Bylandt they met up with and were assisted by M.
Eugene Byasson of Argelés-Gazost. For several years the Exposition Nationale has been
held at Rabastians-en-Bigorre, just north of Tarbes and east of Vic-en-Bigorre. This
Exposition Nationale since 1997 has been held in Tarbes. Mary Crane went to dog shows in
Cauterets as did Madam Harper. The kennels of "de Soum" and "Pic de
Jer" were in Lourdes. The drive from Pierrefitte-Nestales to Cauterets is one of the
prettiest in the world and described somewhat in Mary Cranes books.
